50mm + winter = great portraits from a crappy portrait photographer.

Snowkate-sm

More reason to own a decently fast 50mm lens. The white-out is so great for simplifying your background and drawing more attention to your subject. If you've got keen eyes, you might notice the focus is slightly off, thanks to a really wide aperture, and the resulting super shallow depth of field. The camera likes to auto-focus on edges, so the contrast of the snow on her hat threw it off just a tad. I took this at 1.2 aperture, but should have probably stayed at 1.4 or higher.

Side note: I had to rubber-band a plastic bag around my camera after some heavy fogging and all around wetness, so do take the necessary precautions to keep your stuff dry!
